I enjoy this recording because the powerful foreground sound of the water going into the sewer. You later concentrate on the little drips that you hear and the water falls down. You will notice many different kinds of drips and drops which makes this recording fun to listen to. I also enjoy the noise of the car driving by because it overpowers the already powerful noise of the water falling into the sewer.

This recording gave a off a much different feel than any of the other recording that I had done that day. At this time the wind had picked up a little bit and in the recording you can hear the sound of the crisp wind blowing. The wind was not too powerful but you can hear it whistle by. This also causes wind chimes on a nearby house to being to make soft music heard in the near distance. A dog also is sitting in the yard and lets off a few barks. Unlike my other recordings, the soft wind plays an effective, and not distracting, role in the recording.

This recording intrigued me because of the variety of sounds that are heard. You first hear the nearby traffic from the county road. As the traffic fades you start to hear the birds in the area chirping and also some water flowing caused by the melting of the snow. This variety causes the listener to attempt to pick out each individual sound or simply listen to it as a whole. In picture below the microphone was placed at the top of the picture.

For this sound recording I found a tunnel where water was flowing out of into a lake. I was interested to hear what it would sound like if I was to have the microphones inside this tunnel. This gives it an echoing feel and I believe it is a very interesting recording.

This recording ended up being my favorite of my five recordings. When I was in this area I noticed that several birds were wildly chirping. It was interesting to me because I could hear several different bird calls so I had a large variety of chirping noises. Most of the time I do not prefer when you hear a car drive by but in this case I saw the first car drive straight down the road and the second car makes a left turn. It is interesting to compare the two sounds when listening to see if you can tell that the second car is turning the corner.

Drift Strategy

I have had many plans when it came to my strategy for my Drift 1 assignment. My very original plan was to do it in an area I found not too far off the UWM campus. It was a forest type area where my plan was the walk straight until I hit a tree and then I would make the first turn that I saw available. This idea plummeted when I found out that I would be in my home town of Plymouth, MN for a couple of weekends where I would have much more time and freedom to explore.
The first weekend that I came home it was 5 degrees in Minnesota and windier than you can imagine. My plan was to walk around a lake that I had always driven by. I went on this soundwalk and made it halfway around the lake when I noticed I could no longer feel my hands. I could barely press the buttons on my Mini-Disc player because my hands were so cold. I got a good amount of sounds at that point so I thought I would be fine for my Drift 1. When I was able to get all of the sounds on the computer I noticed that there was heavy wind on every recording. This is when I realized I would be much better off recording a different day. A later weekend I found a much nicer morning where I decided to redo my soundwalk. I went around a neighborhood that I was somewhat familiar with and just randomly walked around without thinking about where I was going. I got some really nice recordings but when I attempted to import them on the computer I renamed the folder of the files and somehow managed to not be able to import the tracks that I had recorded. I sat at the computer for hours until I finally realized that I would be better off simply re-recording my sounds.
I went out the following morning and decided to constrict my walking area for this sound walk. I walked in a similar area to my previous walk but tried to walk in a path that ended up looking like a top hat. Below I have a map with my starting point and my walking path. I will later go into greater depth about the actual spots where I found my favorite sounds. The different sound locations are listed below so you can see where I found each individual sound.
